Eight-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps once said, “I think goals should never be easy, they should force you to work, even if they are uncomfortable at the time.”
This idea of goals being uncomfortable hits home for many businesses. Why? Creating these goals cannot happen until we honestly ask ourselves what is working, what isn’t working, and what we can learn from those things. Thinking of all the positive things may be fun, but digging deeper into what is going wrong causes many to clinch their fists and ignore the realities right in from of them.

Though it’s difficult, creating goals that meet these criteria sets an organization up for success. A business without goals is like a movie without a plot; it’s just a bunch of characters moving around aimlessly with no growth mindset.
